When you access the Internet through your set-top box, you become the same potential victim of hacking as if you went online from your PC. In order to protect its activity on the network, it would be helpful to connect the PS4 via a VPN.
How to Set up a VPN on PS4
When it comes to setting up a VPN on a Playstation, there are several options you can try. You can set up a VPN at the router level or use any of your other devices (PC or Mac) to share the VPN connection. In this article, we will use the PS4, but if you have an older model, the process will be similar.
What do You Need
To install a VPN on your PlayStation and access the Internet, you will need:
Full-featured VPN account;
An optional device that can share your Internet connection.
There are several ways to install a VPN on your Playstation, but you cannot do this in the settings section on the PlayStation itself. You have to use an additional device to redirect traffic. This is usually a PC, a Mac, or a router. The most useful and widespread method includes a laptop, so we will guide you through this type of installation. Remember that the device you are going to connect must have the proper connection. Check if you have an Ethernet cable or a couple of Wi-Fi adapters.
Turn on your Windows PC or laptop and configure a virtual router, and then connect the PS4 to it. If the VPN runs on a PC, then the PS4 traffic is also properly protected.
Open a command prompt on your computer;
To do this, you need to be in the system on the Administrator account or use the "Run as ..." command.
Type 'netsh WLAN show drivers' to see if your drivers support the virtual router;
Find the 'Hosted network supported: Yes' line.
Before setting up, make sure your VPN connection is inactive.
Go back to the command line. Write 'netsh WLAN set hostednetwork mode = allow
SSID = MYNETWORK
key = MYPASSWORD' and press Enter.
Replace MYNETWORK and MYPASSWORD with the SSID (name) of the network and password. Make sure to choose a unique SSID.
Type' netsh WLAN start hostednetwork' and press Enter; this will launch the virtual router.
Open the Control Panel and go to 'Network Connections';
Find the adapter with your chosen SSID (Microsoft Hosted Network Virtual Adapter);
In the same window, find the TAP adapter;
Right-click and choose 'Properties';
Go to the 'Access' tab;
Check the box next to 'Allow other network users to use the Internet connection of this computer';
From the drop-down menu, select the name of your Microsoft Hosted Network Virtual Adapter.
You are all set up. Create a VPN connection using the software of your provider and connect your PlayStation to the virtual router using the SSID and password that you specified. Your PlayStation's activity is now under VPN protection.
